Read AND Think CAREFULLY now ...

“Individuals, said Marcel Mauss, become magicians in three ways - by revelation, by consecration and by tradition - and we can only presume that ninth-century magicians belonging in the third of these categories. Doctrine, revealed or not, seems unlikely to have been readily transmitted over long periods of time except by the written word, and in this instance, revelation would either imply the handing down of arcane theory or be akin to demonic possession. As we shall see later, such possession is largely hysterical in origin and therefore in all probability not pertinent here. And it is highly doubtful that a Welsh necromancer knew anything about the Cabala. Consecration is of course possible, but no evidence exists either for or against it. As for tradition, we know little about just how it was handed down, except that it often relied on investment through ordeal.”

William Woods, A History of the Devil, 1973

It's remarkably well adjusted don't you think?
