Connections ?

Well boy howdy it’s news time!!!

This one is just going to be news item related but the astute may see connections – look at own risk!

First of all, lets look back at the Jan 9 edition of the commuter rag ….

This first wee moment explains, (as George Clooney noted a while back) exactly why George Bush will not win the wars he starts in the Middle East. I say George Bush because frankly, no one who has paid attention would still claim that it is America’s War or even the War on Terror or any other such media spin nonsense.

No this picture sums it up nicely I feel.

Devotion is good isn't it?
The Caption that ran with it read thus: “An Iraqi man inspects ceremonial chains that devout Shiite Muslim worshippers will use to thrash themselves in honour of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Muhammad, who dies at the battle of Karbala in 680.”

Now I may be remiss …. but you know I just don’t see this kind of devotion much these days and as I remember, where I have …. it was denounced by it’s western leaders - even when it was westerners practicing western religion! The fact remains George, no matter what you reasons (and no I don’t care what they are!) you simply do NOT have the stones or the sticks to break people who believe like these people do.

I don’t claim that this is a good or a bad thing – it simply is. While I think it is a tad extreme it is an example we could perhaps all learn something from. I remember my last act of faith and am still working on it – to my estimation I only have about another eighteen years to finish the project.

In the January 10 edition, Page 6 has the picture of 10 year old Anthony Njoroge who was caught in a Church as it burned in Eldoret. More than 30 people died. I don’t care for the Assemblies of God people but frankly it boggles me why anyone thought Anthony and others like him deserved this.

Page 7 carries the story of an Idaho man who cut off his hand because he felt it carried “the mark of the Beast”. Ok fair enough but why, (I am still wondering) did he feel the need to microwave it as well? It was described by Captain Ben Wolfinger thus: “That kind of mental illness is just sad.” Fair Comment.

Also on Page 7 is the pic of Tens of Thousands of devotees in Manila to see the Black Nazarene. Crafted in Mexico and bought to the Philippines in the early 17th Century, it is believed by some Catholics to perform Miracles.

Next we skip ahead to the next edition I got to read which was on Jan 14.

Page 8 runs the article: “Gulf Warning Bush sets sights on Iran.”

In this latest aggression George now claims Iran is threatening the “security of the world” and that the US and it’s allies must unite to confront this danger “before it is too late”. Iran is apparently, “the world’s leading state sponsor of terror”. Of course he was saying this in Emirates Palace at a staggering $2740 a night.

So what we have here is a call from a very cushy place to denounce another bunch of non white people who live near oil. I mean are we supposed to take that seriously? I mean it was Afghanistan wasn’t it … ooops no sorry it was Osama which they still claim they could never find …. Oops no sorry it was Saddam Hussein and his weapons of mass destruction …. Oops no sorry there were none and we also had to stretch to get him and THEN stretch further to even try him .. no ok sorry it was REALLY Iraqi extremists … don’t worry we will win this time … oh ok we won’t eh? Ok Iran it is!!!

Personally I can’t wait until the Bush war machine makes it’s way back home through all the countries it will attack … then it might recognise that the main aggressor in the Middle East of late has been the United States of America. Looks like the war isn’t helping the economy perhaps those wacky extremists had a point about your decadent lifestyle. *Shrugs*

Further over on Page 9 we learn that a survey learnt that n average those that they polled lied four times a day. Men generally five and women three. Hmmm .. once before breakfast, once at morning tea, once at afternoon tea and one for desert. Oddly enough I don’t … but then again consider the Wiggles as a Puritan might … one is Sloth, one gluttony, one is a magician and the other a mummer. Is there a connection? Who knows …

On Jan 16 I learnt of the impending demise of Dura. Poor old Soma Devi of Nepal is something of an outcast but because she is she may get high class medical treatment while experts attempt to flense out the language which they believe she alone on the planet speaks.

Wile I salute the preservation of lost languages, the situation reminds me of a bleating I heard a while back on how everyone should put their powers to helping Terry Pratchett because he has developed a rare case of Alzheimer's. Of course the statement quickly became (as it sped round the world) lets find a cure for Alzheimer’s. *GROAN*

Now this also one presumes has something to do with the rather inordinate number of people in the occult world that find him insightful because he writes books that wryly observe on the obvious. I see this to be very like the number of Goths who loved “Black #1” under the mistaken idea that it was something but profiting from a joke at their expense. Perhaps that sounds harsh but frankly I am sick of having to put up with pseudo wanna be cool hipsters quoting Nanny Ogg as their cool new role model. PUKE.

Only one person have I seen so far who thought as I did.

As far as I am concerned, I say that if you are at all interested in actually helping to heal the sick just do it. Don’t insult everyone by waiting until someone you give a rats about gets ill. If that is the case then don’t pretend it is anything like a good cause – you are working for YOUR cause. There is a difference and not spotting it is the beginning of a slippery path.

Further down the line of not spotting things at the time here is something of a small grab bag ….

Dear old Corey the party boy knob (geez there is some irony there!) has vanished off the radar but the cops have nabbed a young feller who hosted a big party Melbourne which caused great damage and so on for various charges. I hear the words “child porn” on the wind … advice to kids who want to have parties while their parents are away? “Everyone hates a smart arse and like it or not it is ADULTS who make the rules. Hey Corey .. you want to party some more … I think you are about to meet plenty of people who want to party with you – even if you don’t want to party with them.

Prisoners aboard a whaling boat? I heard the phrase: "held against their will".

Well number one point is beware the fact you could be tried for piracy charges and part two is you will find it difficult to argue that you sailed down to Antarctic waters, got in another small boat and boarded a whaling vessel by accident. Indeed one could easily argue that you must have wanted to do so and that you aren’t there against your will at all.

Don’t get me wrong I am against the whaling that occurs these days but unfortunately foolishness like this could well mean lesser sentences, confusing of the issue and other assorted “you have done nothing but make it harder” hurdles. Guess this could be said for the people who roared against the saving of Knut but then roared against the fact that elsewhere another female ate her young … the real world is a dangerous place where all manner of consequences wait for the cautious and unwary alike.

Were there connections? I can see them … pardon me while I go and weep for a bit.
